Oh, Hello There
I suppose I should start by introducing myself. I’m Nicole, and I am an elder emo, Disney parks enthusiast, intersectional feminist, enjoyer of all things Star Wars, cat mom, Jersey girl, and millennial with ADHD. Oh yeah, and I’m a writer, too.
It took me a while to actually feel comfortable calling myself that. Even just after college, when I had been writing for years, I still said, “I want to be a writer.” It took Kevin Smith looking me in the eyes and saying, “All you have to do to be a writer is write. You are a writer,” for that to sink in. (Maybe a blog post for a different day.) Suffice to say, that changed my trajectory quite a bit, and I’ve grown so much in my craft ever since.
Here are just a few things that inspire me on a daily basis:
Music. Especially the masterclass in tone and emotional storytelling that is My Chemical Romance’s entire discography
The 2005 classic film, Pride & Prejudice
Anything Mike Flanagan has made, but especially The Haunting of Hill House
The Haunted Mansion. All of it. And every version.
My cat, Oliver (And also all of my family and friends and my boyfriend)
The world of Middle-earth
Ahsoka Tano
Good Italian food
Mediocre Italian food
The season of autumn
The look I’d see on young Nicole’s face if I told her about everything I’ve done in my life so far
These are just the tip of the iceberg. I’m sure I’ll spill my guts in this section quite a bit. So, to borrow a phrase from my marketing life, “watch this space.”
